Skills Assessment Requirement

Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.

Skills Assessment authority for Arborist is Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Three Programs for skills assessment with TRA.
    • Program A-  Offshore Skills Assessment (OSAP)
      • If your passport is on this OSAP Nominated Occupation and Country list next to your occupation (Arborist) you must apply through OSAP. If your passport is not on this list, apply through Program B or C.
      • OSAP Pathway 1– for applicants who do not hold an Australian qualification in their trade but hold a qualification which is equivalent to an AQF cert
      • OSAP Pathway 2 –  for applicants who hold:
        • a relevant Australian qualification, or
        • a current identified Australian occupational licence
      • To be eligible to apply for the skills assessment program, you must be able to show you have completed full-time paid employment in your nominated occupation, or an occupation that is directly related to your nominated occupation.
    • Program B Migration Skills Assessment
      • You must have a qualification directly related to your nominated occupation (i.e. Certificate III in Arboriculture) or at least 3 years of relevant experience
      • If you have obtained a qualification internationally or an Australian qualification that was not through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you are required to demonstrate 3 years full time or equivalent post-qualification experience
      • If you have obtained an Australian qualification issued through the Australian Recognition of Learning process, you are required to demonstrate 3 years full-time or equivalent post-qualification experience OR 6 years full-time or equivalent experience which can be either pre- or post-qualification
    • Pathway B- Temporary Skills Shortage Skills Assessment

Description
Arboriculture Workers maintain and care for individual trees and shrubs and provide specialist assessment and advice on trees and tree management in urban environments.
Tasks
  • Advising on species selection, site planning and overall tree management and care
  • Examining individual trees to assess their condition, potential risks associated with limbs or trees falling, and determine treatment
  • Climbing trees using ropes and harnesses and elevated work platforms to reach limbs and branches
  • Maintaining and caring for trees and shrubs by pruning limbs and shaping branches using chain and handsaws
  • Removing dead and decaying trees, and grinding out tree stumps
  • Clearing trees from overhead electricity and telecommunications lines

Subclass 190 visa– Skilled Nominated Visa & Subclass 491 visa – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa

To apply for visa subclass 190 and visa subclass 491, you need to have a nomination from the state/territory government where you want to live and work. Each State and Territory have individual requirements that must be met in order to receive nomination. (See below)

While the 190 visa is a permanent visa, subclass 491 visa gives you right to live and work in regional Australia for 5 years with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 visa.

407  Training Visa

The 407 visa a short stay visa for individuals to participate in occupational training or professional development in Australia. This visa is generally valid to stay in Australia for 2 years. Please note this visa is subject to condition 8102 which forbids work apart from the training that is specified in the visa application. You are also required to maintain health insurance whilst in Australia.

To be eligible for visa 407, you need to meet the following criteria:

GTE

You must prove that you genuinely stay in Australia for training and will depart when you complete the training.

English Level

Must have Functional English, i.e. IELTS overall 4.5 with no band less than 4, or equivalent.

Must be over 18 years old.

Subclass 494 visa – Skilled Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa

You can apply for subclass 494 if you have a regional employer who is willing to sponsor you. To be eligible for this visa, you must have at least 3 years of working experience in your nominated occupation and have a relevant skills assessment. With this visa, there is a requirement that you must work for the employer who is sponsoring you.

This visa provides pathway to permanent residency through the 191 visa.

Must be under 45 years of age, unless exempt.

482 SID visa – Skills in Demand visa (Specialist Skills Pathway)

The Subclass 482 SID visa (Specialist Skills Pathway) that requires a sponsorship from an Australian employer. The Specialist Skills stream allows to your live and work in Australia for up to 4 years each time you are granted this visa. You may apply for the Specialist Skills pathway SID 482 visa if you have an occupation on this list, and as long as the employer is willing to sponsor you. The SID 482 visa has a path to permanent residency through the 186 visa.

Must have IELTS atleast 5.0 with no band less than 4.5.

Age

There is no age requirement for this visa.

Study Pathway for Arborist

The Certificate III in Arboriculture is Australia’s trade qualification for tree work and it supports employers and their staff to be compliant with regulations and also to be competitive with other tree services.

Certificate III in Arboriculture course provides you with the most up-to-date techniques using highly specialised equipment to support you to develop your skills and gain your nationally recognised trade qualification.

  • Duration: 18-24 months
  • Cost: Approx AUD  $5807 per year for international students

There are no prerequisites for the Certificate III in Arboriculture. It is available through direct entry.

However, it is preferred that students:

  • Are 18 years or older
  • Have successfully completed at least Australian high school year 10 (or equivalent)
  • Have sound Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills (Note: Applicants who do not hold a minimum qualification of Certificate II or above from an Australian institution will be required to complete an LLN assessment where their language, literacy, and numeracy skills will be reviewed with writing tests and face to face interviews.)
  • Have access to a workplace that contains trees, such as: parks, residential, commercial or industrial properties, road reserves or other installations containing trees
  • Posses at least a moderate level of fitness (students will have to demonstrate an extended duration of physical exertion)
  • Diploma of Aboriculture
