Before you start

To get an accurate answer, have these details ready before you complete the form:

  • the date you first arrived in Australia and the visas you have held since then
  • the date your permanent visa was granted (or, for New Zealand citizens, when you were first granted a Special Category visa)
  • the dates of all your trips outside Australia in the last 4 years
  • any criminal charges or convictions, in Australia or overseas

We check your dates against the citizenship residence requirement (4 years lawful residence, 12 months as a permanent resident, and no more than 12 months away in total including no more than 90 days in the last year). From 1 July 2026 the government application fee for citizenship by conferral is AUD 595, or AUD 365 if you are aged 60 or over or otherwise not required to sit the citizenship test.
