Skills Assessment Requirement
Unless you are exempt in very limited circumstances, you are required to have a positive Skills Assessment to apply for the visas listed above.
Skills Assessment authority for Anaesthetist is Medical Board of Australia (MedBA). To have a positive skills assessment, you must meet the following criteria:
- Three pathways for skills assessment
- Competent Authority Pathway – for overseas trained non-specialists AND specialists including general practitioners
- International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have completed both the assessment and experience components of the medical course
- IMGs must have secured an offer of employment prior to applying for this pathway
- IMGs must have either an approved qualification or undergo an assessment of competency conducted by an approved body
- Must successfully completed 12 months of supervised practice in an approved position
- Standard Pathway – for international medical graduates seeking general registration
- Must have a primary qualification in medicine recognised by the Australian Medical Council and World Directory of Medical Schools
- Two types of Standard Pathway
- AMC Examination – assessment of competency and skill by examination
- Workplace-based Assessment – assessment by examination and workplace-based assessment of clinical skills and knowledge by an AMC credited authority
- Must successfully completed 12 months of supervised practice in an approved position
- Specialist Pathway – for Overseas-trained specialists applying for assessment that is comparable to a trained speciality in Australia (specialist registration) OR overseas-trained specialists applying for an area of need specialist level position in Australia (area of need)
- Must have a primary qualification in medicine recognised by the Australian Medical Council and World Directory of Medical Schools AND must have satisfied all training and examination requirement to practice in their field of speciality
- Please note if you currently hold or have previously held general registration you are not eligible for the specialist pathway. You can complete specialist registration while holding general registration through a different process.

- provide direct medical care to patients requiring general or local anaesthesia for surgical, diagnostic and other procedures such as prevention of pain and maintenance of body function. Anaesthetic Registrars training as Anaesthetists are included in this unit group.
- Tasks

- performing pre-operative examinations of patients to determine appropriate anaesthetic and sedation in concurrence with Specialist Physicians and Surgeons
- discussing the anaesthetic process with patients and obtaining their informed consent prior to surgery
- administering local, regional and general anaesthetics using a variety of methods such as inhalational and intravenous administration
- supervising the transfer of patients to operating theatres, positioning on operating tables, keeping patients warm, and responding quickly and accurately if any problems arise
- monitoring patients throughout surgical procedures and in immediate post-operative procedures
- recording details of anaesthetic and sedation administered, and the condition of patients before, during and after anaesthesia
- liaising with other health care workers to provide diagnosis and treatment for patients with chronic pain, and to diagnose and treat patients requiring intensive care or resuscitation
- may instruct medical, nursing, student and ancillary staff on the signs, symptoms and diagnosis of allergic and anaphylactic reactions to anaesthetic agents, and supervision and treatment of life threatening emergencies

Subclass 190 visa– Skilled Nominated Visa & Subclass 491 visa – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
To apply for visa subclass 190 and visa subclass 491, you need to have a nomination from the state/territory government where you want to live and work. Each State and Territory have individual requirements that must be met in order to receive nomination. (See below)
While the 190 visa is a permanent visa, subclass 491 visa gives you right to live and work in regional Australia for 5 years with a pathway to permanent residency through the subclass 191 visa.
Another difference between the 190 and 491 visa is that you can only apply for visa subclass 491 if you are living and working in regional areas in Australia, while it is not a requirement if you are applying for the 190 visa.

407 Training Visa
The 407 visa a short stay visa for individuals to participate in occupational training or professional development in Australia. This visa is generally valid to stay in Australia for 2 years. Please note this visa is subject to condition 8102 which forbids work apart from the training that is specified in the visa application. You are also required to maintain health insurance whilst in Australia.
To be eligible for visa 407, you need to meet the following criteria:

You must prove that you genuinely stay in Australia for training and will depart when you complete the training.

Must have Functional English, i.e. IELTS overall 4.5 with no band less than 4, or equivalent.

482 SID visa – Skills In Demand visa- Core Skills Pathway
The 482 SID visa (Core Skills Pathway) visa that requires a sponsorship from an Australian employer. You must be nominated to work in an occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL). This visa allows to your live and work in Australia for up to 4 years. You may apply for as many 482 visas as you want, as long as the employer is willing to sponsor you. The SID 482 visa has a pathway to permanent residency through the 186 transition stream.

Study Pathway to Anaesthetist
In Australia, the pathway to becoming an Anaesthetist involves completing a 4 to 6 years medical degree followed by a 1-year Internship, 2 years Residency program, and 5 years of ANZCA training.
The Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine is a 5-year direct entry medical degree, which can be completed straight from high school. This course provides you with the knowledge, clinical skills and practical medical training needed to become a doctor.
The course offers an integrated curriculum, taught in an interdisciplinary fashion around four broad themes by staff from across the faculty, and in a wide range of learning environments, both on-campus and in clinical settings.
For school-leaver students, the first two years are largely campus-based, although with some city and rural clinical placements. Years three to five are conducted in clinical settings, generally in hospitals and practices.
