Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) for Medical Professionals
This stream is for Points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member of nominated by a state or territory government. Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) Visas for Medical Professionals
Unlike the 189 visa, both 190 and 491 visas require skilled workers to be nominated by a state or territory government. The main difference between these two visas is that the 491 visa is a temporary visa (5 year validity). Skilled workers will have a pathway to permanent residency once they live and work in regional area for 3 years. - Your occupation is on the NSW Skilled Occupation List below – Medical Professionals List
- Must be living in NSW and either:
– have genuinely and continuously live3d in NSW for the past 3 months OR
– be employed in a long-term capacity in NSW in you nominated (or closely related) occupation (min. 20 hours per week)
Must have a minimum 3 years of deemed skilled work experience for all occupations within the same ANZSCO unit groups if identified below

- Must be living and working in your nominated occupation in a designated regional area of NSW for the past 12 months (min. 20 hours per week)

- Have completed study in the past 24 months where you are eligible to claim points for “Study in Regional Australia” and your qualification is assessed as closely related to your nominated occupation
Subclass 491 – Stream 3) Skilled in an Occupation Required in Regional NSW
- Your occupation is on the NSW Preferred Region’s Occupation List – see Medical Professionals List below
- Live in an Australian state or territory (*offshore applicants are now eligible to apply under Stream 3, but the likelihood of being invited is very low)
