How can a NZ Registered Midwife work in Australia? – TTMRA Pathway
If you hold practising registration in New Zealand as a midwaife, you can apply for registration in Australia under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition Act (TTMRA).
This applies to the following professions:
- Chinese medicine
- Chiropractic
- Dental
- Medical radiation practice
- Midwifery
- Nursing
- Occupational therapy
- Optometry
- Osteopathy
- Paramedicine
- Pharmacy
- Physiotherapy
- Podiatry
- Psychology
You must hold a current practising certificate in New Zealand to be eligible.
Registration in Australia will only be granted in the same category as your New Zealand registration. Any conditions, limitations, or endorsements that apply in New Zealand may also apply to your registration in Australia.

Step 1: Eligibility
You must:
- Hold a current practising certificate with the Midwifery Council of New Zealand (MCNZ).
Step 2: Register with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency)
- Log in to your AHPRA portal or Create an account on AHPRA online portal
- Complete your identity check (if required)
- After login, choose “Apply for registration“
Step 3: Answer all application questions
- Choose profession
- Do you hold an annual practising certificate as a midwife in New Zealand?
- Are you applying for registration via Trans-Tasman mutual recognition?
- In Australia or New Zealand:
- Are you subject to disciplinary proceedings or any preliminary investigations or action that might lead to disciplinary proceedings?
- Is your registration cancelled or currently suspended as the result of disciplinary action?
- Are you prohibited from carrying on practice as a midwife?
- Are you subject to any special conditions in your practice as a midwife as a result of criminal, civil or disciplinary proceedings?
- Provide your personal details, Address, and Midwifery Council of New Zealand registration number
- In a country other than Australia or New Zealand:
- Are you subject to disciplinary proceedings or any preliminary investigations or action that might lead to disciplinary proceedings?
- Is your registration cancelled or currently suspended as the result of disciplinary action?
- Are you personally prohibited from carrying on practice as Midwife?
- Are you subject to any special conditions in your practice as Midwife as a result of criminal, civil or disciplinary proceedings?
- In New Zealand, is your Registration subject to any special conditions in carrying on practice as Midwife?
- In a country other than Australia or New Zealand, is your Registration subject to any special conditions in carrying on practice as Midwife?

Evidence of any name changes
You must attach a certified copy of evidence of a change of name if;

- you have ever been formally known by another name(s), or
- any of the documents you provide in support of your application are in another name(s).

Evidence of current registration in New Zealand
You must provide evidence of current registration in New Zealand, such as;

- an annual practising certificate, or
- a registration certificate, or
- a valid registration number
Step 6: Make a declaration

New Zealand applicants with conditions on their registration
Nurses and midwives registered under the Trans-Tasman Mutual Recognition (TTMR) Act with conditions on their registration may be required to complete a competence assessment plan. Both documents below must be submitted to the NMBA for consideration.
