The F1 Visa is the most common type of student visa for individuals seeking to study in the USA. In order to be successfully granted an F1 visa, applicants are required to undergo a visa interview. There are five main categories that most F-1 visa interview questions will be based on:

Category 1- Study Plans
Q: Why do you want to study in the US?
Tip on Answering:
- Show the interviewer how convinced you are to study in the US
- A flexible education system, cultural diversity, top-ranked US education programs and a welcoming US community are all potential reasons
Sample Answer:
“Accessing to good research infrastructures and equipment motivates me to pursue my educational progress in the United States. I found American education system for higher suitable to achieve my goals because the US is one of the world leaders in Chemical and Environmental Engineering research areas. Getting acquainted with the latest developments of my research field in a country which is known as the Global Leader of Engineering science, USA, can facilitate achieving to my future dreams.
Q: Why can’t you continue your education in your home country?
Tip on Answering:
- You may wish to discuss the quality of education you will receive studying in the US
- Also mention any special circumstances; i.e. the area you want to major in is not available in your home country
Sample Answer:
“I’ve always been a good student and I always look for the best education that I can get. After spending four years studying my bachelor, I found out that Iran universities are not very good in [xxx], which is my favourite major. So I decided to attend [xxx] university, because I’m sure I will not experience such quality anywhere else.”
Sample Answer:
“I’ve got my Bachelor degree at Peking University and Master degree at Tsinghua University. So, it’s quite reasonable for me to peruse my Ph.D. degree in the United States. You know, the United States has the most advanced technology and science in the world.
Q: What are you planning to study?
Tip on Answering:
- Be confident in the area you would like to major in and your study interests
- The interviewer is trying to decide whether you are a legitimate international student who wishes to study in the US
Sample Successful Answer:
“I got a direct PhD admission from my home university in the major of chemical and environmental engineering, but my emphasis is now on completing the second part of my major, Environmental Engineering and the related issues such as waste water treatment, air pollution modelling, etc., which are my favourite fields of study.”
Category 2- University Choice
Q: Why did you choose this specific university?
Tip on Answering:
- Try to show the interviewer you have a good understanding of the university you will attend and that you have researched this well
- You may discuss things like course structure, the university’s ranking, student organisations or so forth.
Sample Answer:
“The strong involvement of this university in research and industry, comprehensive facilities, well-equipped labs and well-distinguished academic staff provide a high quality of education and research for each student. Its professors are among the best in the field of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and publish lots of related papers in famous journals of engineering each year. So being one of the students of this university will be a great honor for me.”
Sample Answer:
“I am going to attend [xxx] University to start my PhD program in computer science. I chose this university because it is very active in the field of [xxx]. It has highly qualified professors in that field, including my supervisor, Dr. [xxx]. She is a Harvard graduate and has completed her post doc at MIT. She attends top notch conferences every year and I believe it would be a great opportunity to work with her at [xxx] University.”
Q: Which universities did you apply to (both those which were accepted and those which rejected your application).

- Give honest answers to the visa officer- honesty will be appreciated

“Among the five universities I have applied for, three gave me offers. They are Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University and UCLA. But I chose Carnegie Mellon University in the end because….”
Category 3- Academic Capabilities
Q: What are your test scores?
Tip on Answering:
- The interviewer is asking you to hare the scores you obtained for each test you took, including English language tests like Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and International English Language Testing System exam (IELTS), as well as any standardized tests you have taken (e.g., GRE, GMAT, and ACT and SAT).
Q: How well can you speak English?
Tip on Answering:
- TOEFL and IELTS demonstrate your ability to speak, write, read, and understand the English language.

Q: Can you share your high school transcripts?
Tip on Answering:
- You should have all important paperwork ready and available at your visa interview, including your high school transcripts, passport, DS-160 confirmation page, F-1 visa application payment receipt, a copy of your visa photo (make sure your visa photo meets all requirements), and I-20 from the college or university where you have been accepted.
Category 4- Financial Status
Q: How are you planning to finance your education?
Tip on Answering:
- Go over how much your tuition and fees cost, and how you plan to cover these expenses while you are enrolled at your US university.
Sample Answer:
“As you can see in my I20, I got a TA full funding (including a tuition waver and a stipend) which will cover both my tuition fee and living expenses, which will cost $……Moreover, if I need more money, my father can support me financially, which can be proved by this bank statement from my father’s account.”
Q: Do you plan on working while you are studying in the US?
Tip on Answering:
- As a student on a F-1 student visa, you will be able to work part time on campus for a maximum of 20 hours per week while your academic term is in session, and work full time during academic breaks.
Sample Answer:
“I have no plans to work while studying. I want to complete the course as early as possible and come back and join the IT industry in India.” OR
“I plan to get a part time job on campus and work around 15 hours a week. However, the main focus of my trip will be my study”.
Category 5- Post-Graduation Plans
Q: Do you plan to return to your home country after completing your studies?
Tip on Answering:
- Make sure you demonstrate strong motivation to return to your home country after studying. For example, discuss family ties, relationships with friends or your tie to your home country’s culture.
Sample Successful Answer:
“As a PhD degree from the US is a prestigious proof of eligibility in my home country, I want to come back to my country and apply for academic positions there, specially taking an academic position in my own bachelor university, IUT, which I owe to a lot. This is my dream that I hope to come true in the next five years. I have many friends and family in my home country that I will miss. I also am very tied to my home countries culture.”
Q: Do you have a job or career in mind post-graduation?
Tip on Answering:
You need to specify to the visa officer that you do not intend to remain in the US after your graduation, and plan to return to your home country to work.
Sample Successful Answer:
“I am planning to return back and re-join the same company I worked for in my home country after my Masters. I am going to US to upgrade my skills in computer science and update my knowledge in the latest Software Eng practices. This would surely enable me get better results in the competitive field here.”
