Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) for Medical Professionals
This stream is for Points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member of nominated by a state or territory government. Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) and Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491) Visas for Medical Professionals
Unlike the 189 visa, both 190 and 491 visas require skilled workers to be nominated by a state or territory government. The main difference between these two visas is that the 491 visa is a temporary visa (5 year validity). Skilled workers will have a pathway to permanent residency once they live and work in regional area for 3 years. Queensland
Subclass 190 – Skilled Workers Living in Queensland
- Your occupation is on the Department of Home Affairs’ Skilled Occupation List
- Have a points-test result of 80 or higher
- Have ‘Proficient’ English or higher
- Must have lived and worked in Queensland (post-qualification) in your nominated occupation for the past 6 months immediately prior to your application for state nomination (min. 35 hours per week in one full-time job or two part-time jobs)
- Evidence of ongoing employment in Queensland for a further 12 months (min. 35 hours per week)
Subclass 190 – Graduates of a Queensland University (PhD)
- Your occupation is on the Department of Home Affairs’ Skilled Occupation List
- Completed 100% of course in Queensland and has had a decision on thesis or graduated in the last 2 years
Subclass 491 – Skilled Workers Living in Queensland
- Your occupation is on the Department of Home Affairs’ Skilled Occupation List
- Have ‘Proficient’ English or higher
- Must have lived and worked full-time in *Regional Queensland (post-qualification) in your nominated occupation for the past 3 months immediately prior to your application for state nomination (min. 35 hours per week in one full-time job or two part-time jobs).
- Evidence of ongoing employment in *regional Queensland for a further 12 months (min. 35 hours per week)

Subclass 491 – Graduates of a Queensland University (Bachelors and Masters)
- Your occupation is on the Department of Home Affairs’ Skilled Occupation List
- Completed course at a Queensland university/institute
- Have GPA 6.0 or higher
- Have ‘Proficient’ English or higher
- After graduation, must have worked in Queensland in your nominated occupation for 3 months (min. 20 hours per week)
- Evidence of job offer in Queensland for 12 months (min. 20 hours per week)
