The Subclass 407 Training Visa (also called a 407 Visa, or simply Training Visa) is a short stay visa intended for people travelling to Australia to take part in occupational training or professional development. With a Training Visa, you can attend work-based activities to meet occupational registration or licensing requirements, enhance skills in your occupation, take part in capacity building work overseas, gain continuing professional development (CPD) experience or training, and improve skills related to higher education studies.
A Subclass 407 Training Visa is generally valid for stays in Australia of up to two years. When issued, Training Visas are subject to ‘condition 8102’, which forbids work that is not related to the course or training specified as the basis for your visa application. You must also maintain valid health insurance whilst in Australia.
To apply for a 407 Visa, you must lodge your your application online. You can do this regardless of whether you are in Australia or overseas.
It is permitted to include members of your immediate family (spouses and children) in an application for a 407 Visa.
All Subclass 407 visa applications lodged on or after from 11 March 2026, will now require:
- An approved temporary activities sponsor, and
- If the sponsor is not a Commonwealth agency, the applicant must also have a current, approved nomination for a program of occupational training.
Subclass 407 Training Visa Requirements
| COMMON VISA CRITERIA | There are two eligibility pathways for the 407 Visa. However, all applicants must show that they:

| OCCUPATIONAL TRAINEES

This particular 407 Visa stream requires a nomination by the sponsor to do one of the following activities in Australia:
· Training required to obtain registration, membership or a licence to work in Australia or home country · Training for an occupation that is in the 407 Training Visa Occupations List, and in which the applicant has recent and suitable prior experience. Recent and suitable experience includes employment or study experience that:
· Up to 6 months of practical experience, research or observation that is required to obtain an overseas qualification · Training supported by a government agency or the applicant’s home government Occupational training would generally require at least 70% of the training to be on-the-job as opposed to classroom training. |
| PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT | This 407 Visa stream would require you to be working overseas in a management or professional position. Training is primarily classroom training and would need to be in skills relevant to your position. |
| VISA CONDITIONS

The 407 Visa is granted for a specific and variable period of time, ranging from a typical lower limit of six months to as much as two years. The Immigration Case Officer that reviews your application will decide the length of the visa based on the information you have provided and how much training they think you need. When your 407 visa expires, you may be eligible for another type of visa.
If you are outside Australia at time of grant, a 407 Visa allows you to: · travel to and enter Australia after your visa is granted; and · remain in Australia during the stay period granted (up to a maximum of two years), which begins on the day you first enter Australia. If you are in Australia at time of grant, a 407 Visa allows you to: · remain in Australia during the stay period granted (up to a maximum of two years), which begins on the date your visa is granted. The stay period (duration of stay) you have been granted will be consistent with the requirements of your training position or professional development programme. When you receive your 407 Visa, you will be issued with a Training Visa grant notification letter that explains the conditions of your visa, including the maximum stay period and any entry requirements. |
| NOMINATION BY AN EMPLOYER | Your employer must nominate you in order for your to apply for a 407 Visa. Your employer cannot be a sole trader or an individual. |
| Work conditions | Condition 8102: Main applicant must not engage in work in Australia other than in relation to the holder’s course of study or training.
Condition 8104: Secondary applicants must not engage in work for more than 40 hours a fortnight while the holder is in Australia. |
| Visa processing time | The processing time for a Subclass 407 Training Visa can vary depending on Australian authorities’ workload and backlog, as well as how straightforward or complex your 407 visa application is to assess. Typically, around 50% of 407 visa applications are processed within three months, with 90% being processed within nine months.

407 Visa – appropriate qualifications and experience
Nominees for a 407 visa must have appropriate qualifications and/or experience to undertake their planned occupational training.
The Department of Home Affairs (DOHA) will generally consider this requirement to have been met if the applicant can provide a letter from the registering regulatory body in Australia (or the nominee’s home country) confirming that the nominee has appropriate qualifications and or experience to undertake the occupational training.
Alternatively, or in the absence of such a letter, DOHA can make a judgement based on the applicant’s qualifications work experience, as set out in the CV/resumé provided in their application.

407 Visa – conditional registration for health practitioners
Health practitioners who will treat patients as part of their occupational training are required to have conditional registration from the relevant national or state/territory regulatory body. Nominations for health practitioners must therefore include a letter from the relevant registration authority advising that the nominee has the required conditional registration, and that they are legally permitted to undertake occupational training involving the treatment of patients.
