Important: the 457 visa has closed
The 457 visa closed to new applicants on 18 March 2018. It was replaced by the TSS visa, which was in turn replaced by the 482 Skills in Demand (SID) visa on 7 December 2024. The same three step process (sponsorship, nomination, visa) applies to the 482 Skills in Demand visa, which has Specialist Skills, Core Skills and Labour Agreement streams, a minimum of one year of relevant work experience and salary thresholds. See SID 482 visa eligibility for the current requirements. The information below is kept for reference.
457 Visa Requirements
The 457 visa application must either be lodged after the sponsorship and nomination, or at the same time.
457 Criteria
To obtain a 457 visa, your employee will need to meet the following requirements:
- Show that they meet the skill level for the nominated occupation;
- Hold the necessary licensing or registration for certain occupations
- Pass health criteria and hold private health cover for their stay in Australia
- Meet the English language requirement for 457 visas.
Once the visa is granted, the visa holder will be subject to work condition 8107: in general terms, this requires the sponsored employee to continue working for the sponsor in the nominated occupation.
