Registered migration agents are allowed to provide immigration advice and assistance, including help lodging visa applications. Agents must be qualified and demonstrate to the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) that they:

• have sufficient knowledge of migration law and procedures
• are a person of integrity
• are a fit and proper person to provide immigration assistance.

Agents can advise if your visa application is likely to succeed, but they do not make visa decisions and cannot influence outcomes. Only the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (the Department) makes decisions about visa applications.

It is against the law for someone in Australia who is not registered with the OMARA to provide you with immigration assistance.

Some agents work for voluntary organisations and provide services for free. Most charge for services. You can find out how much most agents charge, on average, on this website.

Remember, there might be other charges too, such as a visa application charge.

You need to be sure you choose the right person to be your registered migration agent for your own situation.

Each registered migration agent has different skills and you will need to find one that suits your needs. You might want help in your language, or with a visa to work or study. You might want help from an Australian registered migration agent who lives and works in your country. You might even need someone to help you for free.
